Google is
going to shut down Orkut, the social networking service Google launched back in
2004,explaining that success in other business fields have made its existence obsolete.
Orkut is going to be officially shut down on September 30, 2014, Google's
engineering director Paulo Golgher said. The company will focus on more
profitable and more popular business fields.
“Over
the past few years, Blogger, Google+ and YouTube enjoy success, with
communities appearing in every corner of the planet. Because the active
development of these communities has pushed out Orkut, the company has decided
to bid Orkut farewell,” Paulo Golgher said. “The company will devote the whole
energy and all the resources on making other social platforms as useful and efficient
as possible for the users.”
Until
September 2016, Google has given users an opportunity to export profile data
using its Google Takeout.
An archive
of all public communities will be available online from 30 September 2014. In
case users do not want their posts or name to be included in the community
archive, they can remove Orkut permanently from your Google account. “It's been
a great 10 years, and we apologize to those still actively using the service",
Paulo Golgher said.
Traditionally,
Google closes its services once in a while in spring-clean of its tools and projects
to not waste resources and time on failed ideas.
Orkut was
the very 1st attempt by Google to enter the social media market. It partially failed
to earn much enthusiasm, however it was much sought after in Brazil.
